While there are lots of subcategories, Port falls into two main groups: Ruby and Tawny. Ruby Ports are fruit forward and spicy, while Tawny Ports are nuttier and have caramel nuances.

Port is generally a bad choice for pairing with food because it is way too sweet, and the very high alcohol content overpowers anything that the sugar doesn't. Port really goes best with dessert foods with chocolate or caramel. Ports can also be very nice with blue cheese.
