2007 Alfredo Roca Pinot Noir

88/A+

Tasted by Mike Supple - 08 Mar 2009

Medium ruby core with a pale pink rim. Very intense, youthful aromas of fresh cut violets, ripe cherry, blackberry and strawberry fruits. Good body with soft, ripe tannins and a great punch of acidity making the wine extra juicy on the palate. Round, rich black cherry, blackberry and raspberry are all underscored by a hint of wet earth.

Pinot Noir keeps going up in price due to worldwide demand, but the quality seems to continue to drop. I typically turn to Argentina for great values on spicy reds like Malbec, but the quality for the dollar on this little beauty blew me away. Balanced and light-bodied enough for just sitting around and sipping on a lazy Saturday afternoon or as a way to unwind after work while you’re waiting for the delivery guy to bring dinner.

Medium ruby core with a pale pink rim. Ripe and brambly aromas of wild blackberry and boysenberry are joined by spicy cola, red cherry and a hint of smoky peat. Soft entry on the palate, with restrained and elegant fruit. Strawberry and red cherry lead to raspberry on the mid-palate. Rather smooth and delicate with a floral note of rose petals and touch of earth on the finish. Smooth and very well balanced.

2006 Chateau Ste Michelle Indian Wells Cabernet Sauvignon

90/A-

Tasted by Mike Supple - 08 Mar 2009

Deep ruby core with a bright pink rim that stains the glass. Dark black cherry and plum aromas are accented by baking spices, a touch of fresh herbs and smooth, warm vanilla. Easy entry on the palate with great mouth feel and intensity of flavors. The tannins are very smooth and support the wine without getting in the way of your enjoying it. Spicy nutmeg and vanilla add a nice punch to the blackberry, cassis and black cherry fruits. Just a hint of toast lingers on the finish.

If you’re looking for a young, smooth, easy drinking Cab that packs all the flavor and complexity without the severe tannins, then this is your wine. Juicy and rich, yet smooth and ready to go. It has the body to last another 4 or 5 years, but who has that kind of patience? The rich fruit begs to be paired with a burger or steak, but you’ll want to grab more than one bottle of this because once the food is gone, the smooth texture and balanced flavors will keep you refilling your glass until the last drop disappears.

2007 Loring Wine Co Pinot Noir Keefer Ranch

Tasted by Mike Supple - 15 Jan 2009

Medium purple core with a pink rim. Big candied blackberry, raspberry and cherry fruit explodes on the nose, surrounded by cola and orange zest with a nice lifted rose petal note. Very floral on the front palate with roses swimming around orange and raspberry. Very young, with just a hint of oak spice coming through. Great complexity and balance front to back; great for drinking now, and will keep getting better over the next 3 - 5 years.

2007 Guenoc Sauvignon Blanc

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

88 / A-

Tasted by Mike Supple - 16 Oct 2008

Pale lemon-green core with a bright, clear rim. Fresh aromas of pink grapefruit, lime zest, starfruit and a hint of fresh lemon grass. Very crisp and clean on the palate with ripe lime, lemon and grapefruit and a hit of tropical lychee fruit. Nice acid with a clean, refreshing finish.

A killer value Sauvignon Blanc with everything you’d expect: fresh citrus fruits, hints of herbs and very refreshing. Sure to please any white wine drinker, and great for a hot day (or swigging while slaving in front of a hot grill). Works perfectly with grilled fish, chicken or pastas with cream sauce. A rare California value!

2005 Bodegas Poesia Pasodoble

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

91 / A

Tasted by Mike Supple - 16 Oct 2008

Dark ruby core with a lighter pink rim. Sweet blackberry and cherry aromas up front are surrounded by smoke, soy sauce, dried anise and a hint of barbeque ribs. Medium bodied in the mouth with ripe fruit flavors of blueberry, black cherry and raspberry. The tannins are fairly small and ripe, making this an approachable wine that is ready to drink (but with enough oomph to last another 2 - 4 years). Nice lingering finish with a touch of Good & Plenty candy licorice.

Argentina strikes again by bringing one of the best values to the wine world. A blend of 34% Cabernet Sauvignon (for red fruit and structure), 33% Malbec (for spice and acidity) and 33% Syrah (for rich, dark flavors and body). All this fruit and power needs balance to keep the wine from going over the top, and the acid in the Malbec does the trick. We pulled this wine out on set recently while shooting some Supple Wine videos and not a single person could resist. Two cases of this stuff disappeared in a heartbeat!
