2006 Terlato & Chapoutier Shiraz/Viognier

Monday, January 26th, 2009

92 / A

Tasted by Mike Supple - 29 Feb 2008

95% Shiraz and 5% Viognier, but the little 5% does an amazing job lifting the aromas out of the glass. Fun and different, this is a fantastic little wine. Bright ruby and purple in the glass with a fresh apricot nose over black pepper, blackberry and a touch of menthol. It is smooth and soft in the mouth with rich dark blackberry, apricots and a hint of tar. Spicy and lingering on the finish with a faint dark earthy note.

This wine is a great all around, aromas and flavors. Easy to drink, and fairly versatile: drink it alone or with food - but make it rich, meaty or saucy food, as this is a big wine that doesn’t hold back. Viognier is a white wine, but the small amount added doesn’t affect the dark ruby color of the wine. This is a very common blend in the Rhone region of France.

2006 Perrin et Fils Vacqueryas Les Christins Vieilles Vignes

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

91 / B+

Tasted by Mike Supple - 19 Aug 2008

Medium purple core with a soft ruby and pink rim. Blueberry and boysenberry fruit aromas jump out of the glass, supported by darker hints of earth and charred vanilla oak. Spicy crushed black pepper and dried anise with a touch of flint linger in the air. In the mouth this wine is impressively explosive yet retains an almost impossible elegance. Tons of black pepper spice up front are quickly joined by blackberry and raspberry fruits surrounded by orange zest. Ripe tannins provide excellent structure to support the fruit. The finish of minerals and berries is long and lingering.

2005 Cirrus Syrah

91 / B

Tasted by Mike Supple - 27 Aug 2008

Dark ruby core with a medium rim. Sweet ripe dark berry aromas with lighter floral notes and a hint of green pepper. Lots of acidity on the palate keeping it very juicy and fresh. Ripe and dense but with good balance. Spicy raspberry and black cherry with a smooth lingering vanilla and cocoa finish. Finding a Syrah from South Africa with this much elegance and complexity is refreshing. Not a cheap wine, but high quality and fun for the Syrah lover who wants to try something different.
