Tasted by Mike Supple - 21 Jan 2009
Inky purple core with a bright fuchsia rim. Dark boysenberry with blackberry notes on the nose, followed by a touch of mint, light toasty oak, nutmeg and cedar spice all surrounded by violets and crushed stone. Dark and thick on the palate with juicy blackberry, blueberry and crème de cassis flavors. Medium (+) acid with medium ripe/fine tannins. A touch of smoke, vanilla and baker’s chocolate join the dark fruit on the finish. Still very young and primary, but with enough fruit and structure to age. Drinks well now, and should go at least another 5 years.
Made from 100% Malbec. Aged for 15 months in new (65%) and second use French oak barrels. 1439 bottles produced.

Tasted by Mike Supple - 15 Dec 2008
Medium ruby core with a lighter rim. Aromas of dill, burnt tobacco and earth with nice sweet black cherry. Smooth entry on the palate, but the acid is a bit high in the middle. Dill and cherry flavors with a touch of mint on the back.
Alsace is mostly known for it’s fantastic white wines, and this producer easily makes some of the best of them. The Pinot Noir is nice for a change of pace, but don’t grab this thinking you’re getting classic ripe, balanced and seductive Pinot.

Tasted by Mike Supple - 08 Dec 2008
Thick purple core with ringed by a maroon rim with fuchsia highlights. Very rich aromas leap from the glass, and intensify as the wine sits. Thick fruit - blackberry, blueberry and black cherry - with smoked mint and other herbs are all surrounded by wet clay, violets and lingering wild strawberries. Fairly bold (yet integrated) tannins from the front palate through the lingering finish. Dark fruits flood the palate supported by tannins and acid, expanding on the mid-palate and leading to a long creamy vanilla finish with swirls of roast coffee beans, dark chocolate and ripe black cherries.
A blend of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and a few other reds. Owned by Catherine Pere-Verge, the owner of Chateau Le Gay, one of the best Chateaux in Pomerol, Bordeaux. Using the same wine making team (harvest is 6 months different due to the northern/southern hemisphere thing) this is a very high quality wine made by people with tons of skill for a fraction of the price.

Tasted by Mike Supple - 17 Nov 2008
Medium bright ruby core surrounded by a lighter pink and ruby rim. Initial aromas of fresh toasty oak quickly yield to sweet cherry and wet earth, all surrounded by cool fresh mint and dark black raspberry. Sweet and lush on the front palate leading to a dark, rich mid-palate. Round and full in the mouth with hints of smoky game surrounding the dark cherry and earth flavors. This is young and just hinting at the complexity that will come with some time. Despite the youth, it is an impressively balanced and elegant wine with a very long, smooth finish.

Tasted by Mike Supple - 25 March 2008
Dark ruby on the core with a lighter pink rim. Sweet cocoa powder surrounds bright red cherries, plum and strawberries on the nose with a darker leather and dried mint note leading to a touch of sweet tobacco and blueberries. Very smooth entry on the palate. Round, ripe fruit tannins on the mid-palate. Good overall balance with black cherry, leather and truffle flavors backed by dark toasted oak. The wood tannins build on the back palate leading to a lingering finish of cherry and spicy vanilla.
Ready to drink now or over the next 5 years. Good acid, so drink this bad boy with any tomato-based pasta dish. The tannins from the oak will probably carry it longer, but the fruit will likely fade.

Tasted by Mike Supple - 13 Aug 2008
Very bright medium ruby core and rim. Minty milk chocolate aromas float over rich plum, black cherry and blackberry, underscored by dark earth and wet stone leading to a lingering light floral lift. Rich and full on the palate with hints of chocolate and mint mixed in with the ripe cherries and blackberries. This is a bit fuller and more complex than the delicious 2005, yet retains the same great acid, ripe tannins and long finish.
Made from 100% Nerello Mascalese, a grape native to Sicily. While somewhat high priced, this deserves a value score of an A because it is unlike any wine made elsewhere in the world. It is incredibly well made and absolutely delicious. If you are in the mood to spend around $50 on a bottle of wine, you would be very hard pressed to get a better bottle than this.

Tasted by Mike Supple - 05 Apr 2007
In the glass a dark, almost black core is edged with maroon hints and surrounded by a fuchsia rim. Sweet fresh red fruits lead the aromas and are underlined by a hint of fresh mint, cooler clay and minerals, and a toasty cedar/leather component. The wine makes a soft entry into the mouth and quickly builds on the mid-palate to an enormous, chewy wine. The bold depth of fruit balances the tannic strength with flavors of raspberry, blueberry, cinnamon and vanilla lingering on through the finish. A truly fantastic effort showing the success that could be achieved in 2006 with careful planning and hard work. Tasted twice with consistent notes. 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. For the first time ever, Gerard Perse did not use 100% new oak in any of his wines. While this is a sign that the fruit was not as full and rich in 2006 as previous vintages, his choice to use less shows to be a fantastic decision by the end result of his wines. The 2006 Pavie uses 65% new oak.
While this is an expensive wine, it still breaks into the A- for value for a this important reason: this was one of the best wines of the vintage, and it is a fraction of the cost of the classified growths that are not worth the money in the 2006 vintage.
