89 / A
Tasted by Mike Supple - 04 Aug 2008
Medium purple/ruby core with a bright ruby rim. Leather and earth aromas jump out of the glass surrounded by dark black cherry and candied black licorice, all lifted by crush rose petals. Light and juicy on the front palate with ripe fruit and nice acid. Black cherries are accented by a touch of orange zest.
Easy to drink, easy to pair with food, easy to ask for a second glass.

Very bright medium ruby core and rim. Minty milk chocolate aromas float over rich plum, black cherry and blackberry, underscored by dark earth and wet stone leading to a lingering light floral lift. Rich and full on the palate with hints of chocolate and mint mixed in with the ripe cherries and blackberries. This is a bit fuller and more complex than the delicious 2005, yet retains the same great acid, ripe tannins and long finish.
Made from 100% Nerello Mascalese, a grape native to Sicily. While somewhat high priced, this deserves a value score of an A because it is unlike any wine made elsewhere in the world. It is incredibly well made and absolutely delicious. If you are in the mood to spend around $50 on a bottle of wine, you would be very hard pressed to get a better bottle than this.

Thick, dark purple (almost black) in the glass with a garnet rim. [On first whiff something smelled off - like old wet sponge. This mostly blew off quickly, leaving just a rustic touch of Italian barnyard.] Big cinnamon aromas over dark black cherry and a touch of plum. Notes of dry cedar and green herbs with a rustic wet earth edge. Pretty big on the palate; bold, chewy tannins. Dense core of dried dark fruits, leather and mocha.
Aglianico is a very tannic grape, and with more time this will open nicely as long as the tannins soften before the fruit dries out. Good classic old-world Italian.
