2008 Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc

90/A-

Tasted by Mike Supple - 04 Apr 2009

Very pale platinum-blond color. Fresh and explosive aromas jump out of the glass: ruby grapefruit, cut lemongrass and freshly clipped tomato vines. Great mouth feel. Lush and juicy with vibrant acidity. Tons of ruby grapefruit flavors are joined by ripe lemon and lime. A faint hint of grass comes in on the back end, leading to lingering citrus with a touch of wet stone.

This is what Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is all about. Fresh, juicy, crisp and delicious. Always a strong wine, Kim Crawford has done it again with the 2008 vintage. Great for sipping by itself on a hot day, but also perfect for an outdoor barbecue. Works well with most white fish, particularly when drizzled with lemon. A nice match to grilled pork chops with rosemary too. As a bonus, it’s a screw cap wine, which makes it an easy grab-n-go for a picnic!

Tasted by Mike Supple - 16 Oct 2008

Pale lemon-green core with a bright, clear rim. Fresh aromas of pink grapefruit, lime zest, starfruit and a hint of fresh lemon grass. Very crisp and clean on the palate with ripe lime, lemon and grapefruit and a hit of tropical lychee fruit. Nice acid with a clean, refreshing finish.

A killer value Sauvignon Blanc with everything you’d expect: fresh citrus fruits, hints of herbs and very refreshing. Sure to please any white wine drinker, and great for a hot day (or swigging while slaving in front of a hot grill). Works perfectly with grilled fish, chicken or pastas with cream sauce. A rare California value!

2006 Arboleda Sauvignon Blanc

Tasted by Mike Supple - 15 April 2008

Pale lemon yellow in color with a clear rim. Fresh ripe juice on the nose with big honeydew and candied citrus backed by a touch of crisp asparagus and flint. The palate entry is fresh and bright with Meyer lemon and sweet melon. A great spicy kick comes in on the mid-palate with a huge fresh jalapeno pepper pop lingering in to the finish. Outstanding spiciness throughout the wine with a flinty finish.

This wine is crisp and fresh, and perfect for a hot 4th of July celebration if you’re not a fan of beer. The ‘06 Arboleda combines some typical Sauv Blanc characteristics of grapefruit and lemongrass. Chile makes a lot of high quality wine at a good price. What makes this one particularly worth the money is the unique Jalepeno Pepper flavor. It sounds weird, but trust me, it’s there. It’s not a dominant flavor, but adds a really cool spicy hit to the fruit. Not overly complex, but well made and more than worth the money!
