90 / A+
Tasted by Mike Supple - 24 Sep 2008
Bright ruby core with a salmon rim, almost like a watered down Cosmo. Candied strawberry and raspberry aromas are supported by a rich clay minerality and a light rose petal lift. Nice ripe raspberry fruit on the entry. Medium body with a smooth, round mouthfeel. Impressive weight for a rose, yet remains clean and fresh. There is a nice touch of orange zest and a bit of wet minerality leading to a candied strawberry finish. There is a touch of residual sugar, but it is balanced well by the acid.

Medium ruby core with a light pink rim. Aromas of fresh, juicy raspberries and cherries with sweet tea highlights, surrounded by toasty spices and a hint of wet earth minerality. Juicy entry into the mouth; big ripe raspberries and black cherries are underscored by dark chocolate and black licorice candy. Fairly low acidity and very smooth body from front to back. Cocoa and hints of smoke linger in the finish. Drink over the next 1 - 2 years.
This is a big Spanish wine for not a lot of money; this 100% Monastrell is made in stainless steel tanks to preserve the freshness of the fruit. There’s also a lot of great spicy and smoky characteristics that come from the soil where the grapes are grown. This wine is big and juicy and is great before a meal or with ham, pork or beef dishes. You can recognize the bottle in a shop by the giant “M5″ in florescent green and blue colors. Don’t look for the winery name, as it just says “v.s.l.” in tiny letters. [Monastrell is the same grape as Mourvedre which is common in southern France. The French ones are often darker in fruit - more plum and blackberry than strawberry and raspberry - and earthier while the Spanish ones, like this, often have more red fruit flavors and spices.]

Dark purple core with a fuchsia rim. Big fruit and spice on the nose - fresh anise surrounded by rich black cherry and raspberry with warm vanilla and nutmeg. On the palate it is smooth and full with very fine tannins. The flavors are rich and juicy without getting heavy or jammy. Dark fruits are surrounded by bright cinnamon spice. This is a powerful wine yet it remains very well balanced. A top quality Merlot.
Easily one of the best values to come out of Napa in the last decade or more. Forget the movie “Sideways” and drink this Merlot. It has everything you want in a wine: great smells, rich flavors and a bright, easy-to-remember package. While the grapes come from two of the best vineyards in Napa (Pritchard Hill and Diamond Mountain), the wine itself is made as a joint effort between a Californian and an Australian winemaker. Killer stuff that is great to drink on its own but will go with a variety of cheeses, meats (bbq ribs, hamburgers) and pasta dishes (particularly with tomato sauce).

Crisp and clean aromas. Bright fresh fruits. Very earthy on the front of the palate. Decent mid-palate, but the acid is a little low and the finish a bit cloying.
