2004 Domaine Chanson Pere et Fils Savigny-Dominode 1er Cru

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

89 / A-

Tasted by Mike Supple - 05 Jan 2009

Medium garnet core with a lighter rim. Very sweet aromas up front. Cola, black cherry and vanilla give way to lurking dark wet earth, smoke and mushrooms with an accent of strawberry jam. A touch of dill on the front palate with earth and black cherry fruit. Less overtly fruity than the aromas with more structure, dark scorched earth and burnt tobacco. Fairly high acid, and very well balanced overall.

This is a very nice wine, particularly for the 2004 vintage in Burgundy. Many of the wines are harsh and herbal, but this wine has great silky mouth feel and ripe fruit. The so-called “off” vintages are the best ones to find great deals in Burgundy. This is a great price for a well made Premier Cru wine.

2004 Domaine Weinbach Pinot Noir

85 / C+

Tasted by Mike Supple - 15 Dec 2008

Medium ruby core with a lighter rim. Aromas of dill, burnt tobacco and earth with nice sweet black cherry. Smooth entry on the palate, but the acid is a bit high in the middle. Dill and cherry flavors with a touch of mint on the back.

Alsace is mostly known for it’s fantastic white wines, and this producer easily makes some of the best of them. The Pinot Noir is nice for a change of pace, but don’t grab this thinking you’re getting classic ripe, balanced and seductive Pinot.

2006 Domaine Sainte Leocadie Cuvee Fernand Averoux

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

89 / A

Tasted by Mike Supple - 21 Oct 2008

Clear purple core with a vibrant ruby rim. Hints of violets float around candied strawberry and raspberry aromas with a darker streak of smoke, black cherry and fresh herbs. Smooth, easy entry on the palate bringing lush sweet fruits backed by smoke, a touch of game and a streak of minerality. Good supporting acid makes this an easy choice for dinner. Lingering touch of caramel on the finish.

A blend of 50% Grenache and 50% Syrah. Delivers quite a bit of flavor and power for such an approachable young wine. Minervois is a great region to find some of the best values not only from France, but in the world right now.

2005 Domaine Laboure Roi Maximum Chardonnay

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

89 / B+

Tasted by Mike Supple - 12 Nov 2008

Medium lemon gold color with a clear rim. Fresh tropical aromas of mango and pineapple over a darker mineral streak of wet flint and lingering yellow apple. Fresh entry to the palate with nice crisp acidity the whole way through. A solid core of minerals are surrounded by yellow apple with a lingering touch of raw honeycomb on the finish.

Finding value from Burgundy can be a challenge, but this wine fits the bill. Lots of great fruit flavors with the acid and minerality that makes Chardonnay from Burgundy so unique.

2006 Terlato & Chapoutier Shiraz/Viognier

Monday, January 26th, 2009

92 / A

Tasted by Mike Supple - 29 Feb 2008

95% Shiraz and 5% Viognier, but the little 5% does an amazing job lifting the aromas out of the glass. Fun and different, this is a fantastic little wine. Bright ruby and purple in the glass with a fresh apricot nose over black pepper, blackberry and a touch of menthol. It is smooth and soft in the mouth with rich dark blackberry, apricots and a hint of tar. Spicy and lingering on the finish with a faint dark earthy note.

This wine is a great all around, aromas and flavors. Easy to drink, and fairly versatile: drink it alone or with food - but make it rich, meaty or saucy food, as this is a big wine that doesn’t hold back. Viognier is a white wine, but the small amount added doesn’t affect the dark ruby color of the wine. This is a very common blend in the Rhone region of France.
