Maroon core with a thin pink rim. A bit austere on the nose with oak and slate dominating the fruit - a touch of cherry and some orange zest. Fruity on the front palate (mostly red cherries) followed by a hint of smoke and game with slatey minerality and a touch of oak on the finish.

Mostly Mourvedre with a splash of Grenache.

Medium lemon yellow core with a bright clear rim. Ripe and tropical on the nose with yellow pear and apple fruits backed by rich mango, nectarine and a dose of wet slate. Impressively round in the mouth with nice full body and rich mouth feel. Pineapple and mango flavors are accented by zesty lemon and lime, all underscored by a good dose of minerals and acid. Round and ripe yet crisp and refreshing. A complex, fun California Chardonnay.

90 / B+

Tasted by Mike Supple - 01 Sep 2007

Clear and bright in the glass with a medium lemon yellow core. Good intensity on the nose with ripe yellow apple, candied citrus and a touch of blue slate minerality. The palate presents the same rich ripe sweet yellow apple and pear up front with a nice moderate acidity keeping it crisp and clean. Honeyed notes and a touch of cream, candied lemon and some tropical pineapple and mango notes keep the mid-palate nice and round, and the wine finishes with a medium length of crisp bright fruit. A well made, enjoyable wine great for drinking over the next couple of years.

2003 Rockburn Pinot Noir

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

90 / B

Tasted by Mike Supple - 18 Aug 2008

Medium ruby core with a lighter garnet rim. Light cola aromas and dark, extremely ripe (almost overripe) cherry are surrounded by earth, scorched charcoal and a touch of herbs. Very full bodied and fruity on the palate. The fruit is fresher and brighter, with red cherry and raspberry dominating around a core of sweet cola. Pretty thick and jammy on the mid-palate. A hint of earth, slate and charcoal come in on the back to support the finish. A bit of heat (meaning the alcohol is out of balance) comes through.

2007 Melville Estate Viogner Verna’s Vineyard

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

93 / A+

Tasted by Mike Supple - 09 Jul 2008

Medium yellow gold core with a lighter rim. Very fruity with floral aromas. Honeydew, mango and dried white peach are accented by raw honeycomb and wet stones. The wine is very round and full bodied on the palate, but has nice acidity keeping it vibrant. There is a lot of great minerality under rich mandarin and mango flavors, and a long lingering finish.

Viognier (pronounced VEE-own-YAY) is the perfect white for somebody who is sick of Chardonnay. Viognier has the same body and weight of a Chard, but completely different aromas and flavors. This is a very impressive California Viognier, as many other efforts are often over ripe and alcoholic. The Melville is full, ripe and rich, and it covers the alcohol very well. Finding a Viognier outside of France with this much minerality is a rare treat, and at this price, I simply think you cannot beat the 2007 Melville.

2005 Rosenblum Cellars Zinfandel Richard Sauret Vineyard

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

88 / B

Tasted by Mike Supple - 10 Jan 2008

Medium purple core with a bright ruby-flecked pink rim. Dried currant and prunes fruit aromas are accented by fresh herbs with an underlying note of sweet tea and tobacco, followed by warm brown sugar and raspberries. The flavors follow suit, with tea and prunes up front and rich black currant on the mid-palate. Fairly bold acid keeps the wine from getting too heavy, and the finish has a nice spicy hit of black pepper. 15.6% ABV.
