91/B+

Tasted by Mike Supple - 12 Mar 2009

Medium ruby core with a pale pink rim. Ripe and brambly aromas of wild blackberry and boysenberry are joined by spicy cola, red cherry and a hint of smoky peat. Soft entry on the palate, with restrained and elegant fruit. Strawberry and red cherry lead to raspberry on the mid-palate. Rather smooth and delicate with a floral note of rose petals and touch of earth on the finish. Smooth and very well balanced.

2005 Ken Brown “A” Cuvee Syrah

91/B+

Tasted by Mike Supple - 19 Feb 2009

Intense black and purple core with glass coating bright fuchsia color. Very intense aromas of black raspberry, black cherry and boysenberry syrup. Thick and jammy on the nose. Very different on the palate: much more refined and balanced with white pepper and earth around licorice, black cherry and a touch of game.

This is very much an Australian Shiraz on the nose but a Rhone Syrah on the palate. Only 272 cases produced.

87/B+

Tasted by Mike Supple - 22 Feb 2009

Medium ruby color in the glass from the core all the way out to the rim. Very spicy aromas with a nice punch of white pepper around dark blackberry, boysenberry and a sweet touch of caramel. Fairly substantial in the mouth with very juicy blackberry and raspberry fruits, again accented by the white pepper. Low tannins and good acidity make this easy to drink right now and able to go with many types of foods from a burger to ribs to pizza.

A blend of Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah.

90 / A-

Tasted by Mike Supple - 21 Jan 2009

Inky purple core with a bright fuchsia rim. Dark boysenberry with blackberry notes on the nose, followed by a touch of mint, light toasty oak, nutmeg and cedar spice all surrounded by violets and crushed stone. Dark and thick on the palate with juicy blackberry, blueberry and crème de cassis flavors. Medium (+) acid with medium ripe/fine tannins. A touch of smoke, vanilla and baker’s chocolate join the dark fruit on the finish. Still very young and primary, but with enough fruit and structure to age. Drinks well now, and should go at least another 5 years.

Made from 100% Malbec. Aged for 15 months in new (65%) and second use French oak barrels. 1439 bottles produced.

2005 Rolf Binder Heysen Shiraz

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

91 / B

Tasted by Mike Supple - 12 Feb 2008

Inky dark ruby core with a bright ruby rim. Rich blueberry fruit aromas are countered by nice slatey minerality, smoky *lardon*, and a hint of vanilla cream. The font of the palate is dominated by blueberries and boysenberries. The mouthfeel is impressively round and balanced, and much more restrained than your average overblown Barossa Shiraz. Soft and supple, this beauty is ready to bring home and pop the cork tonight.

Not the typical big jammy South Australia Shiraz. Not the wine if you are looking for an explosive fruit bomb to drink by itself, but rather a more stylish, elegant wine that would go well with powerful, meaty foods.
