87/B

Tasted by Mike Supple - 23 Feb 2009

Pale 24k gold core with a clear rim. Medium intensity aromas of lanolin, honey, dried pineapple and pear. Fairly mouth filling with nice acidity. Flavors of green pear, lanolin, beeswax and a touch of flint. A tiny bit disjointed on the back end, but a nice example of an aged South African Chenin. Drink now.

2003 Semler Malibu Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

78 / F

Tasted by Mike Supple - 15 Dec 2008

Dark purple core with a ruby rim. Nose of seaweed and rice (something like a California sushi roll) with a darker touch of blueberry and raspberry. The seaweed and kelp comes through strong on the front palate too, followed by blackberry, some earth and a little oak. If seaweed is your thing this may be worth a try, but I find this rather off putting.

2003 Nonno Zito Teroldego

90 / B+

Tasted by Mike Supple - 22 Jan 2008

Black core with a touch of fuchsia on the rim. Lighter aromas of oak, violets, caramel, black cherry and a hint of raisin. Medium bodied - fairly bold acid with good balance from the fruit. Sour cherries, cassis and blackberry leading to a dark baker’s chocolate finish. Round soft tannins make it ready to drink now. 13.5% ABV.

Don’t see this type of grape very often in California (or Italy either for that matter). Nice fruit, easy to drink, and a good hefty bottle that will impress people before you even pour the wine. Sealed with wax, which I find annoying for opening, but looks nice.

2003 Bodegas Salentein Pinot Noir

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

90 / A-

Tasted by Mike Supple - 12 Nov 2008

Medium ruby core with a pale pink rim highlighted with garnet. Deliciously smooth caramel and milk chocolate aromas are accented by light violet scents, all surrounding a dense core of ripe black cherries. Much bigger in the mouth than the nose implies with rich cherry fruit, dark scorched earth and silky milk chocolate flavors. Medium to full bodied with hints of baking spices and a long finish.

Not a typical Pinot Noir, this wine has a lot more power and body which make it great for drinking by itself, but also allows it to pair well with all kinds of foods from lighter appetizers to heavier meat dishes like burgers or t-bone steaks.

2003 Nonno Zito Tocai

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

87 / B

Tasted by Mike Supple - 04 Feb 2008

Bright yellow core with a golden tint, thinning around the rim. Big candied lemon aromas are accented by cantaloupe, light toasted walnut and a hint of oak. Round and full in the mouth with a nice medium-bodied weight. A good amount of acid keeps it bright. Creamy lemons are surrounded by cantaloupe and yellow pear, leading to a nice cream and butter finish.

This is a good, but not great wine. Fun if you are looking for something you don’t see very often. NOT to be confused with the famous dessert Tokaji Hungary (which is generally made from a grape called Furmint). This wine is at its peak. Drink before 2009.

2003 Thornbury Sauvignon Blanc

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

89 / A

Tasted by Mike Supple - 23 Jul 2008

Medium yellow gold with a clear rim. Nice nit of toast over very ripe yellow apple with a touch of flint and honeydew. Medium acid on the palate with nice round mouthfeel. Lots of slate and minerality supported by apricot and yellow apples leading to a creamy finish.

Not your typical NZ Sauv Blanc, but seems to have developed nice complexity with time, dropping the austere gooseberry many NZ SBs are known for, and picking up a richer, rounder more mineral-driven style.
