Wine Writer: Emma Criswell

Emma Criswell, contributing wine writer.

"When grapes turn to wine, they long for our ability to change. When stars wheel around the North Pole, they are longing for our growing consciousness. Wine got drunk with us, not the other way." -Rumi

Emma's passion for wine began before she was even old enough to drink (Shhh, don't tell!). During one of her senior-level classes, Emma, the only sophomore due to her overachieving nature, was introduced to wine. Her professor brought in wines from the regions they were studying, and her passion for wine was born. After becoming fascinated and devouring various wine 101 books, she had a firm grasp on the wine industry before she could even legally buy a bottle.

Once she turned 21, Emma began to dive right in to all kinds of wine. While her friends were going on about how Moscato wasn't sweet enough, Emma was trying to figure out why people liked Cabernet Sauvignon so much. As her wine palate evolved, so did her infatuation with vino. After a chance meeting with the editor of The Second Glass wine magazine in Boston, she was hired as a regular wine news contributor. While writing about wine, she realized she needed to experience proper wine country - an atmosphere you just don't find in southeastern Ohio. After a trip to California, she began her wine blog, Dances With Wines, a name that reflects how she came to find wine in her life. Each bottle, varietal and vintage is a new dance one must learn.

Now, she is known in her circle as the "wine friend" - the one who is asked what wine to serve with dinner, which wine to try if a friend wants to taste dark chocolate, and has even been commissioned to buy the wine for a friend's parents' 25th anniversary party. She brings her news writing background and informative but light writing style to SuppleWine.
